Abstract
The purpose of this study is to show characteristics of the speech of the Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico. It is hoped that the material will be suitable for inclusion in a future Linguistic Atlas of the U.S. and Canada. Because it was done with this as its goal, the Atlas principles have been followed in the use of preliminary check-lists for plotting key communities, the Atlas worksheets for discovering lexical and phonological variations and the Atlas fine phonetic symbols with which these variations were recorded.
