Abstract
The prose and poetry of Haniel Long, a contemporary writer now living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will be the subject of this thesis, which will consider the sources of Long's work, its nature, its place in American literature, and the failure of critics to recognize its importance and significance in contemporary literature. Biographical details will be related to the poet's work, in an effort to bring into clear focus his working methods, his technical resources, and his literary ideas. The thesis, however, will not restrict itself entirely to critical analysis; rather it will combine criticism with appreciation, endeavoring to integrate both on the sound basis of discriminating judgment.
