Abstract
At the institutional level, safe spaces and university policy continues to be a source of contention. Moreover, as contention at the university level continues to represent movements in the larger sociocultural context, safe spaces, diversity, and multiculturalism continue to push policy and reactions to policy based on differential needs. Using discourse by university officials, this research situates contexts of institutional power, educational institutions, and social norms of collegiate experiences as part of a larger conversation. By placing multiculturalism and diversity at the forefront in the understanding of safe spaces on college campuses, it interrogates the historical and structural reaches of hegemonic power in a contemporary context and setting.
