Abstract

The research reported in this dissertation was directed toward uncovering and documenting relationships that exist between language and ideology, though It was originally conceived to be the first phase of a research effort whose purpose was to demonstrate that the experimental manipulation of belief systems would have differential effects as a function of the language used in the manipulative process. Prior to the experiment, however, it was necessary to demonstrate that belief systems could be reliably measured in each of a multilingual’s languages, and that those belief systems might indeed fluctuate as a function of the language in which they are expressed.
