Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to provide information for teachers of Australian Aboriginal children about how learning is achieved 'n a fairly traditionally oriented Aboriginal society. The main stimulus for this study was the recognition that bilingual education is only one aspect of bicultural education, and that on its own vernacular literacy does not sufficiently capitalize on culturally conditioned strengths and expectations about learning processes. The research as necessary for several reasons: no detailed study of traditional Aboriginal learning methods has ever been conducted and most whit I Australians, including those teaching Aboriginal children, are not familiar with Aboriginal learning styles. The findings of this stud of traditional learning at Milingimbi in central Arnhem Land are probably applicable to most traditionally oriented Aborigines in Australia. Although there are differences between Aboriginal groups in terms of cultural content, these are minor compared with what they share in common in terms of cultural processes.
