Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine the efficiency of ethnic group children in the use of English idiomatic expressions as found in standard reading texts in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. The procedure followed was: (1) To prepare a multiple-choice test of idioms used in readers in the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades in the elementary schools; (2) To administer this idioms test to a selected sample of sixth grade Anglo children to establish percentile ranks as norms for comparison purposes for all sixth graders in Gallup-McKinley County schools; (3) To compare the performance of sixth grade boys and girls from minority ethnic groups with the performance of sixth grade boys and girls from the Anglo population; (4) To formulate recommendations for teachers of reading in the elementary school based on the performance of children from minority groups.
