Abstract
Universal free public education has been a dream of some since this nation was founded, and the twentieth century has developed -- at least to this point -- a school society which more than ever before in the history of mankind comes close to attainment of this noble endeavor. While most Americans believe that schools are a good investment and that money for schools yields substantial dividends, public school expenditures will have to be justified in the future more than they ever have been in the past.
The rising sophistication of our society and the increasing leisure time of the working class call for efforts from educators which successfully embrace both areas. There must be special training for occupations which require more than present programs of educational development and there must be cultural enhancement to provide people with adequate back grounds for using to best advantage their freedom of activity brought on by shorter work weeks and a higher standard of living which allows for mobility within the culture.
