Abstract
The first manuscript incorporates the theoretical frameworks of Critical Race Theory and Occupational Socialization Theory to offer Critical Race Socialization Theory as a conceptual framework to expand the importance of how we make meaning of race throughout teacher socialization. This framework emphasizes three critical race tenets - counter-storytelling, intersectionality, and challenging color blindness – that are applied across the stages of acculturation, professional socialization, and organizational socialization. This application highlights the unique challenges faced by diverse educators within different educational spaces. The second manuscript is a collective case study that explores the acculturation and professional socialization experiences of two ethnically diverse pre-service physical education teachers. Their narratives reveal three key themes, including a deep sense of obligation to serve their community, the powerful socializing influence of their PETE program, and a pedagogy/ethic of care. Both manuscripts provide important insights into the socialization of individuals of color in K-12 schools, teacher preparation, and the school workplace.
