Abstract
This research was undertaken in order to examine the relationship between the energy cost of running on the treadmill with running on the track at the same speed, for the same length of time and at the same grade. The running speed was 7.5 miles per hour, the grade zero and the duration of the run five minutes. The data used for the comparison between the two methods of running were collected over the last thirty seconds of the run. The two measures used in the comparison were oxygen uptake and heart rate, A. special apparatus was constructed for the collection of the expired gases and radio telemetry used to determine heart rate, All nine subject were competition athletes who were first tested on the treadmill to ensure that they were capable of running in a steady state at the required speed. The oxygen uptake was calculated in milliliters per minute per kilogram of body weight and the heart rate in beats per minute. Analysis of variance was used to determine whether or not there was a significant difference between the two methods of running at the five per cent level of confidence. The results indicated that there was a significant difference at the one per cent level of confidence between treadmill and track running when heart rate was used as the indirect measure of energy cost, but there was no significant difference between treadmill and track running at the five per cent level of confidence when oxygen uptake was used to measure the energy cost. Seven of the eight subjects in the heart rate comparison, six of the eight subjects in the oxygen uptake comparison, and seven out of nine in an overall comparison of the two methods of running required more energy to complete the track test than the treadmill test.
