Abstract
This dissertation consists of four studies and is divided into five parts. Part I contains a description of the calculations and equipment used for these four studies.
Part II is a study of tris(hydroxymethyl)nminomethane (THAM) for use as a standard in solution calorimetry. The heat of solution of THAM in 0.100 M HCL was determined at 25°.
Part III is a study of the thermodynamics of proton ionization
from some unsaturated, five membered, nitrogen ring compounds in dilute aqueous solution at 25°. Values of deltaK, pK and deltaS are reported for 1,2,3-triazole, benzotriazole, 4,5-dibromo-1,2,3-triazole, 1-phenyl- 5-methyl-1, 2, 3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid, 1-phenyl-1, 2, 3triazole-4-carboxylic acid, 1-phenyl-1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid, 1,2, 3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid, 1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid,tetrazole, 5-methyltetrazole, 5-trifluoromethyltetrazole, 5-phenyltetrazole, 5-phenoxytetrazole, 5-methylthiotetrazole, 5-hydroxytetrazole, 5-cyclopropyltetrazole, 1,2,4-triazole, protonated 1,2,4-triazole and protonated pyrazole.
Part IV is a study of the thermodynamics of proton ionization from some B-diketones. Values of delta H0 , pK and deltaS are reported for proton ionization from acetylacetone, 4-hydroxycoumarin, 3-methyl- 4-hydroxycoumarin and 5-bromocoumarin.
Part V is a study of the thermodynamics of proton ionization from some arsenic acids. Values of deltaH, pK and deltaS are reported for proton ionization from methylarsonic acid, ethylarsonic acid, propylarsonic acid, butylarsonic acid, phenylarsonic acid, p-aminophen,ylarsonic acid, o-aminophenylarsonic acid and dimethylarsonic acid.
