Description

Capoeira demonstration (Salvador) accompanied by atabaques the pandeiro and berimbau. Various such musical instruments were added to capoeira to help camouflage it against its oppressors. The most important is the berimbau (Figure 1) which dictates mood and determines rhythm. Sounds are produced when the user strikes the metal wire with a baqueta (wooden stick). To vary tone one touches on and off the wire with a coin and the gourd serves as a resonance chamber when it is placed over the chest or stomach. The pandeiro (Figure 2) or tambourine is widely used in capoeira, samba dances, and popular music. The atabaque (Figure 2) is a generic name given to oblong wooden drums of various sizes. The hands are employed for softer beats while for heavier tones uet are used. The a aba ue is con- sidered sacred in Afro-Brazilian ceremonies where it is used to address each deity and announce his or her arrival with a different drumbeat. It is also used in capoeira.
