View of the rundown sobrados on the ladeiras (ramps or ascents) leading from the Cidade Baixa to the Cidade Alta. This area has assumed many of the characteristics found in the Pelourinho. As in all areas of urban decay, a variety of tertiary economic activities including gambling, smuggling and parallel currency exchanges reflect a problematical socioeconomic reality. Esta área tem assumido muitas das características encontradas no Pelourinho.
