Description
One of the many narrow streets leading to the Pelourinho where most of the sobrados desperately need restoration. In these streets where members of the affluent colonial society once lived, one descends today into a Fellinesque world where everyone and everything mingles. The once-elegant sobrados now house students, taxi drivers, prostitutes, thieves, priests, vendors, beggars, small shops and bars, etc. One finds in the vicinity of the Pelourinho a mixture of beauty, and suffering and horror which reflects the agony of Salvador's past and the difficult reality of the present.
