Landmark in the Barra district marking the founding of Sao Salvador by Tomd de Souza in 1549 with the Santa Maria Fort in the background. In view of the failure of the captaincy system, the Portuguese Crown decided to establish a central administration to coordinate colonization and settlement. The captaincy of Bahia, centrally located, was chosen for this purpose.Marco no bairro da Barra, que marca a fundação de São Salvador por Tomé de Souza, em 1549, e, ao fundo, o forte de Santa Maria. Devido à decadência do sistema de capitanias, a coroa portuguesa decidiu estabelecer uma administração centralizada para coordenar a colonização e o povoamento. A capitania da Bahia, com localização centralizada, foi escolhida para este propósito.
