Thousands of speculators and settlers flocked to mining camps in the interior from coastal settlements, and even from Portugal, which attempted in vain to restrict emigration. In 1776, Ouro Preto was over three times as populous as New York.9) Vista de Ouro Preto, com a Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Carmo e o Museu da Inconfidência ao centro. Milhares de especuladores e colonizadores vindos das colonizações costeiras e até mesmo de Portugal debandaram para as minas. Em vão, Portugal tentou restringir esta emigração. Em 1776, Ouro Preto era três vezes mais populosa que Nova Iorque.
