58) The Cantagalo favela (slum) sprawls on the hill with the same name, side by side to the elegant apartment buildings in Ipanema. In the background lurks the Corcovado. This is one of the numerous shantytowns existing in Rio de Janeiro. Pathological population growth, outstripping all efforts to provide urban infrastructures, huge numbers of abandoned street children, sprawling favelas, saturation of transportation systems pervasive air and environmental pollution and the aggravation of various other social problems are among the challenges which face the government of Brazil's largest cities.58) A favela Cantagalo espalha-se pelo morro de mesmo nome, ao lado de elegantes prédios em Ipanema. Ao fundo distingue-se o Corcovado. Esta é uma das muitas favelas existentes no Rio de Janeiro. Com o rápido crescimento populacional, os esforços feitos para implantação de infra-estrutura urbana são sempre insuficientes. O enorme número de menores abandonados, o crescimento das favelas, a saturaçãao do sistema de transportes urbanos, uma penetrante poluição ambiental e a piora de vários outros problemas sociais estão entre os desafios que o governo de grandes cidades no Brasil têm que encarar.
