To commemorate the 100 years of Brazilian independence, plans were made to erect a statue of Christ to overlook Rio de Janeiro. However, it was not completed until October 12, 1931. The site selected was the Corcovado peak which rises 704 meters above the city. To reach the summit, one can drive up through the Tijuca Park or take the cobble train from the Cosme Velho station near the Laranjeiras district.43) Corcovado (à esquerda), bairro Botafogo e Pão de Açúcar, vistos do Parque da Tijuca, acima do Jardim Botânico. Para comemorar os 100 anos de independência do Brasil, planejou-se erigir uma estátua de Cristo para contemplar o Rio de Janeiro. Porém, esta não foi terminada antes de 12 de outubro de 1931. O lugar escolhido foi o pico do Corcovado, que fica 704 metros acima da cidade. Para alcançar o topo, pode-se se vir de carro através do Parque da Tijuca ou pegar o bondinho na estação Cosme Velho, perto do bairro Laranjeiras.
