Annexed to the right of the airport is the island of Vilegaignon, where now the Naval School museum is located, and where the French had attempted to settle in 1555. It was along this part of the bay that the city of Rio de Janeiro began to spread out.13) Vista dos bairros Flamengo e Glória (à esquerda; em sua maior parte sobre aterros), centro do Rio e aeroporto Santos Dumont (à direita). Junto ao aeroporto, à direita, encontra-se a ilha de Vilegaignon, onde atualmente localiza-se o Museu da Escola Naval, e onde os franceses tentaram se estabelecer em 1555. Foi ao longo deste pedaço da baía que a cidade do Rio de Janeiro começou a se espalhar.
