29. A estudante (The Student), 1917. Malfatti had also studied in Germany, with Expressionist instructors, as well as in the United States. Today it is difficult for us to look at these works and consider them radical or shocking. Compared with the academic works known to audiences at the time, they were perceived as undisciplined and disrespectful of accepted rules of taste and execution. They were certainly unfamiliar.
