Description
15. Vista do Rio de Janeiro da Rua do Senador Cassiano em Santa Tereza (View of Rio de Janeiro from Senator Cassiano Street in Santa Teresa), 1883. The view of the city by Grimm shows the colonial buildings in the distance, constructed among the hillsides that rise in the foreground to return to the tropical vegetation of the forest surrounding the city. The expressive sweep of clouds lends an emotional, romantic mood to the scene. The curving shoreline at right is one of the many graceful and seductive configurations along this extraordinary coastline.
