When they were first published, Debret's views of life in Rio were unpopular with the city's Portuguese inhabitants who denounced them as "inaccurate" and "outdated." Today, however, historians consider them a valuable source of information and largely accurate, if not always flattering, depictions oflife in Rio at that time.
