Description
The floodland areas of the Pantanal contain a large variety of fauna and flora. Of special significance is the pantanal (swampland), a flat floodland area shaped like a rectangle which extends northward along the Paraguay river basin from southwestern Mato Grosso do Sul into Mato Grosso. During the rainy season the Paraguay river and its tributaries overflow, giving rise to a variety of fauna and flora. When the waters recede during the dry season they leave behind fertile soil deposits and lush grass plains, which are attractive for cattle raising and other agricultural activities such as the cultivation of rice. Large cattle ranches flourish in these grassland areas.
