In 1986, the Southern region contained about 15% of the total national population, with large numbers of descendants of European immigrants, especially Italians, Germans, Ukranians, Spaniards and Poles. In the late Eighteenth Century Azorian colonists settled the southern coast and then moved inland. In an effort to colonize the vast empty areas of southern Brazil, in the early Nineteenth century the government encouraged European immigrants to settle in this region. However, the largest immigration influx into Brazil occurred between the end of the 19th century and World War I, when over 2.5 million immigrants arrived. Colonization patterns in the South have resulted in numerous small family landholdings and the most favorable land concentration pattern in the country. Many of these landholdings are mechanized, crop diversification is widely used, and collectives and small farmer organizations cater to local needs.Jovem mulher de origem alemã em Blumenau (Se). Em 1986 a região Sul possuia aproximadamente 15% de toda a população brasileira. Sua população é constituída por um grande número de descendentes de imigrantes europeus, especialmente italianos, alemães, ucranianos, espanhóis e poloneses. No fim do século XVIII, colonos açorianos se estabeleceram no litoral sul, e então deslocaram-se para o interior. Num esforço para colonizar as vastas áreas desocupadas no sul do Brasil, imigrantes europeus foram atraídos no início do século XIX para se estabelecerem nesta região. Entretanto, o maior fluxo imigratório no Brasil ocorreu no período que vai do fim do século XIX até o início da Primeira Guerra Mundial, quando mais de 2,5 milhões de pessoas entraram no país. Este modo de colonização na região Sul tem resultado na mais favorável distribuição de terras do país com inúmeras pequenas propriedades sendo administradas pelas famflias que as possuem. Muitas destas propriedades agrícolas são mecanizadas, a diversificação das colheitas é largamente usada e pequenas cooperativas agrárias atendem às necessidades locais.
