Description

Young child on the donkey led by bis grandmother to work on the small family plot in southern Bahia. The labor force on ranches in the sertão were primarily mixed bloods, especially caboclos. The relative social freedom in the hinterland was especially appealing to those whose social position would otherwise be marginal. Vaqueiros or cowboys still roam the caatinga on horseback tending to zebu cattle. Both cattle and men are a hardy lot, able to adapt to this harsh natural environment. Despite recent economic opportunities, the sertão remains as one of the most poverty-stricken regions in Brazil. Illiteracy and malnourishment abound.
