Today, one in every three economically active persons is a woman (1987) and this figure is steadily rising. Nevertheless, women are among the worst paid workers in the country.Mulher vendendo seus produtos no mercado local do bairro de Morumbi em São Paulo (SP). Em 1950 somente 14% da força de trabalho era feminina. Hoje, uma em cada três pessoas economicamente ativas é mulher (1987) e esse panorama tem crescido constantemente. Entretanto, as mulheres estilo entre os mais mal pagos trabalhadores do país.
