Description
Mother and her six children outside their home in the arid sertão in southern Bama. Brazil has a population of over 142 million (1988), the sixth largest in the world. However, it has managed to reduce its population growth from an average of 3% in the 1950s to 2.1 in the middle 1980s. Brazilian women have an average of 3.5 children, yet among the poorer sectors of society it is as high as 7.3. ln recent years, family planning services and the usage of contraceptives have expanded. Nevertheless, Brazil faces large and difticult problerns to extend such prograrns to its vast city slurns and to distant rural regions.Mãe com os seus seis filhos do lado de fora de sua casa no sertilo do sul da Bahia. O Brasil possui uma população de mais de 142 milhões de habitantes (1988), a sexta maior do mundo. O crescimento populacional tem reduzido de uma média de 3% nos anos de 1950 para 2.1% em meados dos anos 80. As mulheres brasileiras têm em média 3.5 crianças, mas ainda nos setores mais pobres da sociedade esse índice ultrapassa 7.3. Nos últimos anos, serviços de planejamentos familiares e uso de contraceptivos têm se expandido, contudo, o Brasil enfrenta grandes e difíceis problemas para extender tais programas nos vastos bairros pobres das cidades e nas grandes áreas rurais.
