Description

Convent of the Ordem Terceira do Carmo in Cachoeira (BA) on the Paraguaçú river. Members of the affluent colonial society constructed lavish mansions and churches. The zona da mata coastal region provided abundant rainfall and fertile massapê soil which proved to be very suitable for sugarcane cultivation. The labor intensive sugar economy was dependent on massive infusions of African slave labor and the en engenhos were usually located close to coastal urban centers to facilitate the exchange of goods and services.Convento da Ordem Terceira do Carmo (século XVI) em Cachoeira (BA) ao longo do rio Paraguaçú. Membros da opulenta sociedade colonial construíram pródigas mansóes e igrejas. A zona da mata, regiao costeira provida de abundantes chuvas e fértil solo de massapê, provou ser muito adequada para o cultivo de cana-de-açúcar. A economia implantada era baseada na exportação de açúcar e na utilizaçílo intensiva de mão-de-obra escrava. Os engenhos eram, quase sempre, localizados perto dos da centros urbanos costeiros para facilitar o intercâmbio de bens e serviços.
