Azuleios (tiles) in the courtyard of the Church of the Ordem Terceira de São Francisco in Salvador (BA) depicting Portuguese ships in the port of Lisbon before the city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. The vast Brazilian territory that the Portuguese discovered in 1500 was sparsely populated with indigenous peoples, mainly hunters-gathers. One of Portugal's constant concerns was how to settle the newly discovered continent and exploit its natural resources.Azulejos no pátio da Igreja da Ordem Terceira de Sílo Francisco em Salvador (BA) mostram navios portugueses no porto de Lisboa antes da cidade ter sido destruída por um terremoto em 1755. O vasto território brasileiro, descoberto pelos portugueses em 1500, era escassamente povoado por pequenos grupos indígenas que praticavam a caça e a pesca. Uma das constantes preocupaçãos dos portugueses era como colonizar o novo continente e explorar seus recursos naturais.
