Description
View of the dam, power plant, and enormous manmande lake at Sobradinho (BA). ln the background is arid caatinga vegetation. Built in the middle of the sertão on the São Francisco river, this huge hydroelectric project has created several pioneer irrigation projects and has helped to solve some of the Northeast's severe electrical shortages. Nevertheless, the sertão needs many smaller targeted projects to attack the severe problems created by the droughts and socioeconomic inequalities. Construída no meio do sertão, no Rio São Francisco, este gigantesco projeto hidroelétrico tem criado vários projetos pioneiros de irrigação e tem ajudado o Nordeste a resolver alguns dos seus severos problemas de eletricidade. Contudo, o sertão precisa de muitos outros projetos menores orientados para a solução de problemas criados pelas severas secas e pelas desigualdades sócio-económicas.
