The Brazilian Indians practiced various forms of ancestral spirit possession and their religious lives were centered around gods who embodied natural forces (rain, rivers, etc), Afro-Amerindian syncretism has had an important influence on Afro-Brazilian religion.Uma placa em Santarém (PA) anunciando um chefe espírita indígena do Xingu, dotado de mediunidade, capaz de resolver todos os problemas materiais e espirituais. Os índios brasileiros praticavam várias formas ancestrais de possessão do espírito. Sua vida religiosa se concentrava em volta de deuses que tomavam a forma de forças naturais (chuva, rios, etc.). O sincretismo afro-americano tem tido importante influência na religião afro-brasileira.
