Description
View of the Church of São Francisco in Ouro Preto (MG). The Catholic Church arrived with the first Portuguese explorers in 1500. Jesuit priests and those of other orders helped the Portuguese establish coastal settlements, build schools, and convert the various hostile lndian tribes. The Catholic Church became quite powerful during the colonial period and it built numerous elaborate baroque and rococo churches and convents. Some contain magnificent sculptures and architectural works, using gold, marble and other fine materiais.Vista da Igreja de São Francisco em Ouro Preto (MG). A Igreja Católica veio para o Brasil com os primeiros exploradores portugueses em 1500. Padres Jesuítas e de outras ordens religiosas ajudaram os portugueses a estabelecer o povoamento da costa, a construir escolas e converter várias tribos de índios hostis. A Igreja Católica tomou-se bastante poderosa durante o período colonial, tendo erigido numerosas igrejas e conventos de elaborado estilo barroco e rococó. Algumas dessas construções contêm magníficas esculturas e trabalho arquitetónico em ouro, mármore e outros materiais finos.
