Minas Gerais possesses one of the largest reserves of iron ore in Brazil, most important of which are hematite of high purity found in the so-called "iron quadrangle" in the southeast part of the state.23) Mineração a céu-aberto no complexo da Ferteco, perto de Congonhas do Campo. Minas Gerais possui uma das maiores reservas de minério de ferro do Brasil, sendo o mais importante a ematite de alta pureza, encontrada no chamado quadrângulo férrico, no sudeste do estado.
