Description
The Laranjeiras Palace in Rio de Janeiro, still used by the state governor, was built during the early Republican era, when Rio de Janeiro still was the capital of Brazil. After losing the 1930 election, Getúlio Vargas (governor of Rio Grande do Sul), led a successful armed insurrection and was installed as provisional president by nationalist officers, backed by the urban masses. Vargas would dominate the politicaI scene of Brazil until his suicide in 1954 and during this era Brazil pushed ahead with industrialization and increasingly became urbanized. Vargas skillfully manipulated the various sectors of the Brazilian elite, placated the military and enacted numerous reforms for the masses from which he drew strong popular support.O palácio das Laranjeiras no Rio de Janeiro, ainda usado pelo governador do estado, foi construído durante o início da era republicana, quando o Rio de Janeiro ainda era a capital do Brasil.
