Freshly picked coffee beans. The reign of Pedro II (1840-1889) is considered by many to be the Golden Age of Brazi lian poli ticaI hist ory. During this time the cu1tivation of coffee in the Southeast (especially in the state of São Paulo) flourished, transforming the economy of the country. Pedro II was greatly concerned to modernize his country and coffee production required a railroad and port infrastructure. Pedro managed to bring domestic peace to Brazil, bu t a war against paraguay would undermine his reign.Grãos de café colhidos recentemente. O reinado de D. Pedro II (1840-1889) é considerado por muitos como a Idade de Ouro da história política brasileira. Durante esta época o cultivo do café no Sudeste vigorou (especialmente no estado de São Paulo), transformando a economia do país. D. Pedro II estava grandemente preocupado em modernizar o seu país e a produção de café requeria infraestruturas, como uma estrada de ferro e um porto. D. Pedro II conseguiu trazer paz doméstica ao Brasil, mas a guerra contra o Paraguai arruinaria seu reinado.
