Description

View of Ouro Preto, former Vila Rica (Minas Gerais). After generations of frustration, gold and precious stones were found in the late Seventeenth century in the region that became known as Minas Gerais. This discovery had important repercussions, since by the middle of the Seventeenth century, sugar profits had begun to decline in the face of competition from Dutch sugar coming from the Antilles. Thousands of speculators and settlers flocked to the mining camps of Vila Rica (Ouro Preto), Sabará or Mariana in the interior, from coastal settlements, and even from Portugal, which vainly attempted to restrict emigration. ln 1776, Ouro Preto, the center of the large gold rush, was over three times as populous as New York.
