19) Azulejo (tile) depicting court scene in Lisbon. The Portuguese Crown depended heavily on the mineral wealth generated in Minas Gerais to finance its lavish expenditures. However, mining techniques were primitive, in most cases ecologically destructive placer mining, and productivity declined rapidly in the gold fields. As the supply of gold and diamonds dwindled, the Portuguese attempted to maintain income from the region by tightening regulations and imposing a variety of taxes and demands on mining which stimulated local discontent.19) Azulejo representando uma cena da corte de Lisboa. A Coroa Portuguesa dependia fortemente das riquezas minerais de Minas Gerais para financiar sua opulência. Entretanto, as técnicas de mineração eram primitivas, muitas vezes, ecologicamente destrutivas, ocasionando o rápido declínio da produtividade das minas de ouro. A medida em que o suprimento de ouro e diamante diminuia, os portugueses procuravam manter a receita da região reforçando as regulamentações, e impondo uma variedade de impostos e demandas sobre a mineração, o que gerou o descontentamento local.
