As sugar lost its importance, the region fell into decay and the industrial revolution of the 19th and 20th century shifted all economic and politicaI power to the booming cities of the South and Southeast.Engenho de cana-de-açúcar na Ilha de Itamaracá (PE). Quando o açúcar perdeu a sua importância, a região entrou em decadência e a revolução industrial dos séculos XIX e XX mudaram todo o poder económico e político para as cidades em grande desenvolvimento no Sul e Sudeste.
