11) Herding cattle in the sertão. In order to supply first the coastal sugar estates and urban centers, then later the mining regions, with meat, leather, and beasts of burden, large cattle ranches were established during the colonial period in the semi-arid sertão in northeastern Brazil.11) Criação de gado no sertão. Objetivando primeiro o suprimento dos centros urbanos e das fazendas de cana-de-açúcar situadas na região costeira e posteriormente das regiões de mineração, com carne, couro e tração animal, grandes fazendas de gado foram estabelecidas durante o período colonial na região semi-árida do sertão no nordeste do Brasil.
