Statues of the biblical prophets in the courtyard of the church of Senhor Bom Jesus do Matozinhos in Congonhas, Minas Gerais, carved by the Brazilian baroque master, António Francisco de Lisboa or Aleijadinho (the Little Cripple). His magnificent sculptures and architectural works can be seen in several of the region's colonial towns. The mining wealth of Minas Gerais permitted the growth of an sophisticated urban society in the interior. A populace of government officials, engineers, architects, businessmen and speculators were able to indulge their fancy, building sumptuous baroque and rococo mansions, churches and convents in the new towns, and attracting in turn painters, poets, musicians and sculptors.Estátuas dos profetas bíblicos no pátio da igreja do Senhor Bom Jesus de Matozinhos em Congonhas, Minas Gerais, esculpidas pelo mestre barroco brasileiro, António Francisco de Lisboa, ou Aleijadinho. Suas esculturas magníficas e seus trabalhos arquitetónicos podem ser vistos em diversas cidades da região colonial. A riqueza mineira de Minas Gerais permitiu o crescimento no interior de uma sociedade urbana sofisticada. A classe dos oficiais do governo, engenheiros, arquitetos, homens de negócios e especuladores, tiveram a oportunidade de entregar-se à sofisticação, construindo mansões suntuosas nos estilos barroco e rococó, igrejas e conventos nas cidades novas, e assim, atraindo pintores, poetas, músicos e escultores.
