Description
The Serra dos Órgãos near the city of Rio de Janeiro forms part of the Serra do Mar mountain range, which runs parallel to the coast in most of the Southeast. This range and the Serra da Mantiqueira and do Espinhaqo, served as natural barriers during the early colonial period to the exploration of the hinterland. Ignoring the Tordesillas treaty of 1494 (which gave large areas now in Brazil to Spain), various bandeiras (adventuring parties of armed settlers) were organized, primarily by Paulista (residents of the state of São Paulo) coastal townships to search for precious metals and raid Spanish Jesuit reductions for Indians to work on agricultural estates. These bandeiras helped Portugal to secure the vast Brazilian hinterland into its domain.A Serra dos Órgãos, perto da cidade do Rio de Janeiro, é parte da cadeia de montanhas da Serra do Mar, à qual corre paralela à costa no sudeste. Esta cadeia e as Serras da Mantiqueira e do Espinhaço, serviram como barreiras naturais durante o início do período colonial na exploração do interior. Ignorando o Tratado de Tordesilhas de 1494 (o qual dava grandes áreas do agora Brasil à Espanha), várias bandeiras (grupos aventureiros de colonizadores armados) foram organizadas, primeiramente por cidadãos paulistas (residentes do estado de São Paulo) na procura de metais preciosos e para invadir reduções jesuítas espanholas na busca de indígenas para trabalharem nos estados agricultores. As bandeiras ajudaram Portugal a assegurar o vasto interior brasileiro em seu domínio.
