A black woman roasting coffee beans. The enormous wealth and prosperity of the engenhos were dependent on massive infusions of slave labor. The number of engenhos multiplied with increased European demand for sugar and African slaves were gradually substituted for Indian labor. Although estimates vary, it is commonly believed that some three and a half million African slaves were brought to Brazil during 1550-1850.Uma mulher negra torrando grãos de café.
