Description
Sugarcane plantation in the state of Pernambuco in northeastern Brazil. The Portuguese colonists quickly realized the enormous agricultural potential of the narrow coastal region and brazilwood exports were quickly replaced by sugar which was in high demand in Europe. The largest number of sugarcane plantations were concentrated in the Northeast in the states of Bahia and Pernambuco.Plantação de cana-de-açúcar no estado de Pernambuco, no nordeste do Brasil. Os portugueses rapidamente se deram conta do enorme potencial agricultural da estreita região costeira. A exportação do pau-brasil foi substituída pelo açúcar, o qual estava em alta demanda na Europa. O maior número de plantações de cana-de-açúcar estava concentrada no nordeste e nos estados da Babia e Pernambuco.
