View ofthe Ver-o-Peso market and downtown modem high rise buildings in Belém. ln the foreground is one ofthe canons ofthe Castelo Fort built in the ear1y 17th century by Portuguese settlers. At this location, the Guamá river, a tributary ofthe Amazon river, meets Guajará bay. The Portuguese fortified this location to prevent English, Dutch and French ships from sailing up the Amazon river and claiming territory.Vista do Mercado Ver-o-Peso e dos modernos arranha-céus do centro de Belém. No primeiro plano vê-se um dos canhões do Forte do Castelo construído no início do século XVII pelos colonizadores portugueses. Nesse local, o Rio Guamá, um dos tributários do Rio Amazonas, entra na baía do Guajará. Os portugueses fortificaram este local a fim de prevenir que os navios ingleses, holandeses e franceses penetrassem pelo Rio Amazonas e desse modo reclamassem direitos territoriais.
