Abstract
A combination of many and varied circumstances gives an unusual interest to the origin and natural relationships of Zea mays, although investigation of this sort does not always have an immediate utilitarian objective. But, this type of investigation must of necessity project itself into the remote, and sometimes obscure, past where attention becomes focused on many moot questions. Such intriguing problems as the relative antiquity of agriculture in the Old World, the length of time requisite for the development of maize as a human food stuff, and new ideas concerning techniques of aboriginal agriculture may perhaps be solved by information brought into the light of scientific deduction.
