Abstract
This report analyzes New Mexico’s economic performance from the 1950s through the mid‑1980s, highlighting the state’s dependence on federal spending and extractive industries. It describes the boom of the 1970s, the bust of the early 1980s, and the uneven recovery of the mid‑1980s, with strong growth in urban areas but severe decline in rural mining regions. Forecasts for 1987–1990 anticipate modest growth below national averages.
