Abstract
The McCune Charitable Foundation commissioned the UNM Bureau of Business and Economic Research (BBER) to conduct a three-part study of the arts and cultural industries (ACI) of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Part 1 of the study is a quantitative analysis of the ACI's impact on the economy of Santa Fe County; BBER researchers input county employment and wage data into a model using Implan Pro 2.0. The second part is a qualitative analysis of the relationships between the ACI and the various other sectors of the community. To investigate these dynamics, BBER interviewed nearly 100 ACI and community members. The third part describes the principal challenges and opportunities for Santa Fe, examines policies and practices, and concludes with a discussion of strategies for rejuvenating the ACI economy. The study found that in 2002, Santa Fe's ACI and cultural tourism generated over $1 billion in receipts, employed 12,567 workers, and paid $231.5 million in wages and salaries. The ACI and related cultural tourism were funded primarily with revenues originating outside the county, contributing substantially to New Mexico's tax base. The study was released in four documents: an executive summary; part 1; parts 2 and 3; and a slide presentation of the findings. Illustrated with charts and tables.
