Abstract
While a frightening number of examples of New Mexico's architectural heritage is eroding, the wood used in the construction of doors, windows, roofs and porches is less transient, thus providing a clearer more complete record of architectural styles of this area. It is the woodwork of the Colonial and Territorial periods which is the focus of this study, whose purpose is to describe, define and illustrate the different phases of the woodworking traditions as they relate to the architectural traditions of New Mexico.
A photographic record of important examples of this woodwork has been compiled and a chronology of architectural woodwork has been developed in this study according to structure, style and technological changes. The examples of woodwork have been divided into categories first of time and then of type. Outstanding characteristics of each category are explained, then the reader is referred to a series of photographs illustrating examples of each category.
