Abstract

The subject of my thesis is the attempted explication of the process involved in the conception, design, construction, and display of three pieces of sculpture which were specifically intended to be physically activated by the viewer. The term “kinesthetic” was adopted from an observer’s comment to describe this manipulation activity.

The three pieces of sculpture in the chronological order of their completion are: “Mantel Piece,” “Juvenile Detention Center,” and an untitled companion piece. A complete description of each of these sculptures is provided and photographs of them are included as illustrative figures.

The main problem common to all three of these sculptures was to key the viewer through various visual and tactile devices so that he would become involved with the works and operate them. These keying devices included color and material choices, handle applications for manipulation and operation, the placement and composition of components, and the positioning of the sculptures themselves. The individual solutions and technical working out of the keying devices are explained in detail for each piece. Another element common to all three sculptures of the series is the use of wheels as the central compositional and thematic symbol. The reasons for using wheels throughout the series are discussed after the individual variations and differences in selection, construction, and disposition of the wheels in each piece have been examined.

Other conclusions concern various viewer movement patterns generated by the sculptures in addition to direct kinesthetic involvement. These include the mutual awareness of museum-goers and the ritual of a viewer’s perusal of an art work. Finally, the role and future potential of this type of sculptural approach is discussed and conclusions drawn.
