Abstract
This thesis presents a general study of early shipbuilding in New Spain, with special emphasis on the period, 1519 to 1565. It is intended to be preliminary to a dissertation on a phase of the same general subject. This paper is presented for the historian, and is not intended to be a technical study of shipbuilding. The story of shipbuilding in New Spain is closely related to the story of exploration of the New World and the conquest of New Spain. I have tried to cover the narrative of exploration and conquest only insofar as it relates to shipbuilding and the importance of shipbuilding the historical events of the period.
