Abstract
This work surveys and compares four approaches of design methodology: (1) Traditional Design; (2) Systematic Design; (3) Design utilizing the Patterns by Christopher Alexander; and (4) The Second Generation of Design Methodology as defined by Horst Rittel; with the aim of determining methods to facilitate and improve the results of the design activity. Of the four, the explicit and argumentative design process offered by Horst Rittel provides the best opportunity by which to initiate meaningful change. The author, by means of case studies, offers his experience in developing and utilizing Direct, Indirect and Informal Group Argumentative Design Processes that fulfill Second Generation characteristics.
